So did the boomerang work in space?

Remember this? Takao Doi wanted to know if boomerangs work in zero g. Because wanting to know stuff like that is what makes humanity great. So he went and got Yasuhiro Togai, a world boomerang champion, to teach him how to throw a paper boomerang. Then he went into space and tested it.

So did it work? Watch and find out.

I'm a little disappointed it was a three-pronged boomerang, but that can't be helped as they turn tighter, and you're not exactly kicking it for space up there (geddit?). Truly awesome stuff.

the boomerang wasnt really in space... just zero g. its the air that makes the boomerang turn, not gravity.

  2. Well, duh!

The question was what role gravity might play in the process, I'm sure.

Noöne'd be stupid enough to expect it work without *air*.

    I've got a better question:

    Do boomerangs work underwater?

You have to wonder about the state of microgravity research. It currently seems to embody a philosophy of: "Hey lads, we've got a few billion dollars lying around in research grants, and a shitload of airtime on the parabolic flight aircraft. Let's go up there and throw a boomerang / cat / water balloon. Beats doing real research."

(Yes, all three of those have been done.)
